The reconstruction period and when our country was expanding west, women and men’s clothing was very odd at the time. Many women dressed blandly showing how they were oddly told how to dress. My first primary source what men of the time would be wearing. They wore jackets that was under colored and high topped hats. My second primary source is women and how women would behave and wear during the period of expanding and the women would wear bland long clothing. Men and women in this time didn't really have a great sense of fashion and will not have a good sense for a long time. My third primary source is a Flapper during the Roaring 20`s dancing to music. Flappers were women who dressed in very tight and short clothing and also showed a lot of skin which they were not supposed to but they did because they had just recently got their independence. My fourth primary source is more women showing how short they dressed in the 1920's. Women were expressing themselves through what they wore by making a drastic impact to the nations culture.. With my first two sources you saw that people were bland and had no color. Then it swaps over to having women and men in more colorful clothing. Women's independence really helped them to do this. This change in clothing style was much more than what it sounds like. The clothing then inspired many people to show off that they are independent people.

http://hemlinequarterly.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/ourdancingdaughters.jpg----picture of a women from the 20's http://studioomo.com/portfolio_default.html----picture of art from the 20's
My first two primary sources contain what classical people had or acted like. The first one of my sources is a picture of classic women that tried to look traditional and not stick out like a sore thumb. During this time all the women looked the same and usually just worked around the house doing nothing that could be considered not normal. The second of my primary sources is a classical painting of what might have hung in someones house in the late 1800's. People of this time always tried to keep the art and such in their house viewed as normal and not out of the bunch. This picture is a painting that would represent someones family and showed them having a respectable time while not getting too out of hand. The reason they would put this artwork up is to make sure they fit in with everybody.
My third and fourth primary sources have a much different approach to them. See people changed their cultures a lot during the boom of the 20's. As you can tell in my third picture the women expressed themselves in a much different matter as they began cutting their hair short and wearing much inappropriate dresses as too the earlier standards. The fourth source shows the artwork many enjoyed during the times of the big boom. This picture as bright bold colors that would not be found in the houses of the traditional beliefs. It is a picture that shows partying and people having an all out fun fest.
These sources connect to each other through the years of developing the new beliefs. The women became a more essential part of society with their works in the factories and such. Women used to sit home all day, make sure they had food ready for the men, and make sure they had clothing. In the 20's the women became much more independent in what they did such as smoking cigarettes. They also did not follow the strict dress codes that they would have had to follow 50 years in the past. Another thing that society changed in were their style. People didn't want to listen to classic music and became interested in jazz. Also people didn't want the boring old pictures that displayed their families past and wanted something that would stick out in their life and would portray them differently then their ancestors. A lot has changed over those 50 years as you can tell by the envolvement of the women's culture and peoples belief in their culture.

The way women dressed during this time showed how little freedom and independence they had. Women were not allowed to show much skin in the mid 1800`s besides their hands and face. My first primary source shows how an average women would dress during the Reconstruction/Expanding West time period. They wore long draping clothing that was dull colored, and as you can see the women did not seem extremely happy in it as they didn’t smile in their pictures. My second primary source is a man during this same time period. Men wore Brown pants, with a plain shirt, a long dull colored jacket and a large top hat. Men and women in this time didn’t really have a great sense of fashion, nor did they express themselves through what they wore. My third primary source is a Flapper during the Roaring 20`s. Flappers were women who dressed in very tight and short clothing and also showed a lot of skin. They were the first to truly express themselves in what they wore. No women had done this before this time period. My fourth primary source is a male also during the roaring 20`s. Men now wore more colorful clothing and even added a little style of their own as they now wore large bowties. Men and women were now smiling in many pictures and were expressing themselves through what they wore. Lastly, in a span of around 70 years you can see how drastically men and women`s clothing styles had changed. With my first two sources you saw how little people could express themselves and where what they want. Then it switched to gears to women and men smiling and being happy in all their pictures. Women independently choosing how to dress and men even showing off a little style. This change in clothing style was much more than what it sounds like. It brought forth a new era of change in our society that propelled all people to have independence in what they choose to do. ~ DANNY ROBINSON

Listening to the radio was a big deal in the 1920’s and most people did it with their family. It was the quickest way to stay up to date with the news. The second picture is of a famous actor from the 1920’s. Louise Brooks was one of the many women to start wearing the flapper girl style in the 1920’s. This was a big change from the ankle length dresses and long hair. There was a very significant change in the culture during the time period we’ve studied. Most of it is because of the advancements in technology. The change in what women wore and how they looked shows how their rights also changed a bit. They went from much conserved people to almost daredevils with how they looked. The way news was now spread improved a lot thanks to technology advancing and the radio coming into play. It made it much easier to learn about what was going on.
