-Explain the negotiations and decisions you and your country had to make as they assessed and dealt with the classroom crisis, as well as with other countries in our fictional world. What were your motivations? What issues or problems did you face?
-What were the 3 most important factors that eventually caused war in our class? In what ways were our causes of war similar to what happened in WWI?
ANSWER BOTH PARTS OF THE PROMPT. CITE SPECIFIC EXPERIENCES AND INCIDENTS FROM OUR CLASSROOM SIMULATION.

ReplyDeleteIn today's simulation i noticed how much the size and power of the country impacts its ability to receive help in time of need and distress. During the simulation, I saw the power of treaty's and alliances, and how much it can impact the outcome of a country. I also realized how much a difference it makes with the form of diplomacy you use, whether its big stick, moral, or dollar.
In the simulation I noticed how most of the people in the "countries" were for helping "penland" and after alliances were made, almost all of the countries were against "penland.'' That shows how much alliances make a difference in situations after they are made. Ive learned a lot from this simulation, and im glad we did it in class.
In today’s simulation, the country of Yorkton (where I was from) decided to remain neutral and keep peace. We would defend our borders and if needed, come to the aid of Caldonia. Yorkton made alliances with Caldonia, Sandia, Bahkan, and had a non-agressive/right of passage treaty with Morovia. Yorkton saw that Caldonia had an excellent army, and that Sandia had a large population, which made Yorktown drawn to them. An alliance was created between them and they were all against Penland. Caldonia had an alliance with Penland, but was tricking them and turned against them, which left them with no alliances.
ReplyDeleteDuring the simulation, Penland tried their best to make an alliance with certain countries, but had no luck and were denied. The smaller countries like Bahkan, decided to join the countries that were stronger so they wouldn’t be destroyed. They knew that if they didn’t sign an alliance, then they wouldn’t survive. Most members of Penland saw that if the four countries (and Morovia) were to attack them, they wouldn’t survive, even if they did have the best army and navy. They then began to think that they should surrender, instead of trying to take on the other countries. Penland showed militarism by using threats and acting aggressive. They used their power to influence other countries, but it ended up not working in the end. Penland tried to make alliances, but it didn’t work. They also showed imperialism by bullying Bahkan. Everyone is the activity showed nationalism by rooting for their country to win. All people wanted to advance their interests and be sure to do the right thing for their county to survive.

my experiences were that in a time of trouble countries will unite and fight for the good of there countries. my other experiences were that I was threatened a lot to make choices which leads to a lot of stress. I also experienced what it is like being a president of a country. I had to make hard choices and even though it was just an activity, I still had to think long and hard what I was going to do.
ReplyDeletemy other experiences were what it is like to be in a country going through a war and the decisions they have to make. whether those decisions be easy or hard there were still a lot to make for the good of your country. the last thing I experienced was the pressure of joining a war and staying out of war.

Today I was a member of the Bahkan Government. As you all know Bahkan was the country that Penland actually started the violence with. They have been bombing the capitol and and been killing a lot of our soldiers. At first we went to the Penland government to try and smooth things over, but they said it wasn't actually the Government that was involved in the attacks. It was a small citizen group. So Bahkan established a mutual defense agreement with Penland.
ReplyDeleteLater in the simulation I was asked by several other countries such as Caldonia and Sandia to join a secret alliance to Crush Penland in one clean blow. At first i thought it was a great idea, but as the simulation went on it seemed like some of the big countries were going to going to betray us. In the end it was all a scheme and we dominated Penland. They had no chance to beat us. It was ever country against Penland. So Obviously we know who one the war.
Bryce Collingwood
In today's simulation, we were acting as different countries in response to the country Penland declaring war on Bahkan. In response, the countries made alliances and decided to attack Penland. My country, Morovia, decided to not get violently involved, however, the countries Sandia, Caldonia, and Yorkton had right of passage through our country. There were 4 1/2 countries that stood up for Bahkan and declared war on Penland. Penland used threats against people and were trying to get alliances. Sandia and Bahkan, and Yorkton and Caldonia were already in their own alliances, and they decided to join together to attack Penland.
ReplyDeleteFrom what we learned following the simulation about WWI, Penland was using a lot of militarism by throwing threats to the people in different countries. They were tryng to show off their power and influence everyone into going on their side. There were a lot of alliances made in the stimulation. The 4 1/2 alliance was made to kept Penland from hurting Bahkan, while Penland was trying to get alliances so they could have support in the attack of Bahkan. Penland was using imperialism as well. I know this because Penland went after Bahkan, trying to gain power from them. Penland was a very big country trying to take over and control a little country like Bahkan. I believe every country had it's share of nationalism. We each wanted to "show off our guns" and brag about how great our countries were. We were motivated and cared strongly about our country's interests. We wanted to pursue those interests to make the right decision in the end. After learning a little about WWI, we learned that each country had it's own relation to some of the countries in WWI. Caldonia was England, Penland was Germany, Sandia was Russia, and Yorkton was France. They each had their characteristics that related to those countries of WWI.
- Liz Kratz
In today's simulation, I learned that it doesn't take the strongest country to win the game. Penland had the best military and best income. But when the four countries combined, we came up with a greater income, military, and navy. It showed that alliances are important in war. Bahkan was the clear weakest country. But, it allied with three other countries and remained strong. When it was known that some alliances were to be broken, Penland panicked. It only relied on one alliance and was stabbed in the back. Caldonia was smart and made a fake alliance to trick Penland and a real one to overrule it.
ReplyDeleteAlso, we saw militarism from Penland when they thought they were all that. They flashed their muscles and thought they were invincible. When other countries ganged up on them, they surrendered. Nationalism was shown because some countries wanted specific landmarks. Whether it was forest land, rivers, or land in general, countries had a specific goal to take over. Caldonia clearly wanted more land. They even opted to take over Morovia for land but decided against it. They figured Penland was enough.

During today's simulation, I was a representative from the country of Penland. Our country was strong, but we were not well liked. We made efforts to make alliances and agreements with other countries, but they wouldn't work with us. We ended up losing, due to the fact that all five of the other countries ganged up on us.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was interesting that no one wanted to team up with the stronger country; together they would have been able to conquer all the other countries and win the battle.
Morgan McMullen
In our simulation we had a country and we had to try and get other countrys to join our sides for the war. We had the hardest job of getting people on our side because everyone hated our country because we attacked another one. some reasons why people should have join us were because we had the strongest army and 2nd largest navy so we could have won the war with a little help. Our problems where that everyone wanted to attack us and take us down.
ReplyDeleteOur class went to war because the other countrys wanted to expand to the river. Another reason that people wanted to go to war was for nationism or there pride for there country. A 3rd reason that we went to war was because that people where ready for a war and had armys ready to attack. They were similar because countrys wanted to expand in the cival war and become more powerful. They also went to war for there nation.

Our country was Morovia. We had many decisions to make. For example, our country wasn’t involved in the situation with Bahkan and Penland, so we had to decide if we wanted to get involved or stay mutual at first, we decided to back up Penland, who was our original secret ally. When we had a chance to negotiate, Caldonia said if we don’t let them through our land to attack Penland, them and all their allies will attack us. So we had the choice to stay allies with Penland or go with Caldonia. We decided to let Caldonia, Sandia, and Yorkton to pass our lands and stop there. The main motivation I think was staying alive and not having the whole class against you. Also, making many treaties and having allies. The biggest issue I think we faced is decided to stay or go against Penland.
ReplyDeleteThere were three main causes I think that started our class war. Penland, was abusing its power and harassing Bahkan. Which made the class angry and want to attack the bully, which in this case was Penland. Also, Penland was too proud to back out of war when Caldonia offered them the chance to surrender. Finally, when a country attacked another country, all the victimized countries allies will attack the bully, which gets so many more countries involved, that didn’t need to be involved. Our class situation related to WW1 in a couple of ways. First, there were many alliances that formed, in class it was Caldonia and Yorkton. For example in the real world, The Triple Alliance was France, Russia, and England. Also, Nationalism was shown in the class when Penland when they didn’t want to surrender. It’s shown in real life when Germany would tell all the students to fight for their “Father Land” Finally, both in the class and in real life, countries were threatening each other. In class, Penland and Caldonia threatened people.

We made the decision to make an alliance with Bahkan, Yorkton, and Caldonia. We also made the decision to make a ‘right of passage’ deal with Morovia. At the end of the simulation, we decided to attack Penland. Our motivation to form the four-way alliance was to become a much larger and stronger force before we would attack Penland. We were not strong enough to attack them ourselves, and the other countries seemed to have the same idea. We were motivated to attack Penland because they had started to attack Bahkan, and we had heard that Sandia was next. We needed to attack before they did. We were also motivated to have a right of passage through Morovia to ensure a neutral stance with them. We faced the issue that Penland wanted an alliance at one point with us. We turned them down, but this also could have made them more inclined to attack us because we would not help them.
ReplyDeleteThe three main factors that caused war in our country were the attacks from Penland on Bahkan, the threats from Penland, the popular idea of attacking Penland. Our class simulation was similar to WWI because we had a bigger alliance of four countries, like there was a triple alliance between Bahkan, Caldonia, Yorkton, and Sandia. Imperialism was shown by Penland attacking the smaller and weaker country of Bahkan. Germany was attacking weaker countries in an effort to expand.
Elise Barberra
Our country Bakhan in the simulation was very small, new and poor. We already started off at war with Penland. Our goal was to try to team up with another nation to help fight against Penland. The main goal for us was to join an alliance due to our lack of everything to try to overpower Penland. At first we didn't have anyone that wanted to help us, but we later teamed up with 3 other nations. We joined the alliance of Yorkton, Sandia, and Caldonia to overthrow Penland. By doing this we increased the size of our army, navy, and land. In the end we overthrew Penland and stopped them from taking over.
ReplyDeleteTheir were 3 factors that lead to war in our class. One factor was that Penland was trying to bully Bakhan. Another was the other countries being at risk of Penland's wrath. One more factor was disputes between rivers affecting every nation. The all relate to WWI because Penland was just like Germany. Germany bullied other countries until most of the countries teamed up to go against them. This is how our entire class simulation related to WWI.
-Austin Marshall
For our country, Caldonia, we decided right away that we wanted to clear out Penland because of how they were overpowering and treating other countries badly. We decided to negotiate mutual defense treaties that were made public with 3 of the other countries to guarantee support and let us all gain the upper hand in the country over Penland. After that, we then negotiated a defense treaty with Morovia that would let us be able to cross through their land if we needed to cross it to fight Penland. And finally we negotiated a "secret" treaty with Penland for mutual support but the plan behind that was to completely abandon the treaty and go against Penland with our allies, Sandia, Yorkton, and Bakhon. We basically wanted to stop Penland's growing power and we faced the trouble of convincing them to trust us and sign a treaty even though we would break it in the end.
ReplyDeleteI think Militarism was a pretty big problem amongst the countries, starting with the bully country Penland. They had a large and powerful army and wanted to expand and completely force the smaller and weaker country of Bakhon out, which started this whole "prewar" thing. Also alliances could be looked at as an issue because there were some that were broken of which upset a lot of people. But for the most part the alliances were true and everyone stayed loyal to their agreements. But the largest problem I think there was would have to be the Imperialism of Penland. As I said before they just wanted to mainly take over all of the countries that were smaller than them so that they had more power which was definitely not right. These all can be connected to WWI. Militarism = Germany with their large and powerful army, Alliances = there were probably many that were eventually abandoned and torn off, and Imperialism = Germany yet again trying to gain full control of the smaller European countries.
- Jayme B.
MY countries negotiations were with all the other countries except for Penland. We made alliances with all the countries except for Penland. the decisions we had to make were weather or not we should become alliances with Penland or with the other countries who were joining together. We also had to choose whether or not to break our alliance with another country.
ReplyDeleteOne reason was Penland was threatening everyone saying join us or we will destroy you. another reason was that Penland was attacking Bahkan. Penland also was showing militarism by having the big army and threatening all the other countries. Germany had a big army that was powerful and skilled like Penland.
-Colin Huggins
In our classroom simulation my country was Yorkton. Upon looking at our countries assets and desputes with other countries, my group quickly realized what negotiations had to be made. With the added world crisis of Penland trying to take back Bahkan, we had to pick whether to side with one of the two countries. Since Penland had threatened to try and push back our boundries by forcefully taking the mouth of the river back, on top of the fact that Yorkton already had a secret alliance with Bahkan, we chose to support Bahkan. Negotiating, however, was very difficult because any other country could be at the same one you were visiting at the same time and if you didnt want them to over hear it was tough luck because they could do what they wanted. Another thing that was tough was making friends with the countries that were supposed to be enemies (in our case, Morovia).
ReplyDeleteThe three most important factors that caused war in the class were that Penland was acting very aggressivly, the three biggest countries were already in an impearealistic battle with one another, and when Bahkan was attacked the other countries allined with them felt obligated to help. This relates to WWI because when Germany and Russia went to war, France declared war on Germany because they were allies with Russia, and England then declared war on Germany because they were allies with France; so it was a snowball of alliances just like the initial alliance of Yorkton and Caldonia, became the alliance of Yorkton, Caldonia, Sandia, Bahkan and partly Morovia. Also countries such as Germany had been acting very aggressively just as Penland had done.
-Guthre
The negotiations and decisions we had to make included simply weather or not to get involved. Staying out of it would have seemed to be the better option, but isolating ourselves may hurt us in the long run, as nobody will feel obligated to help us in a time of need. So we decided getting involved was the better deal. Our next decision was who to side with, Penland or Bahkan. After some negotiating, and considering the fact every other country was for Bahkan, we decided to even out our actions, not getting directly involved in the war but allowing passage for countries helping Bahkan through out land. Our main issue was that we had a treaty with Penland, and we had to decide weather we would completely go against that by attacking them, or keeping peace and staying out. We were motivated to help Bahkan mostly by peer pressure. Other countries "Join or die" attitude was not only intimidating, but totally accurate.
ReplyDeleteThe 3 most important factors that lead to war include the fact that Penland even decided to bomb Bahkan in the first place, and the tension that started to build up in the surrounding countries, and the realization that all the other countries combined could take Penland down for their injustices. This is similar to WWI in that there were tensions between many European countries, and they realized the had the equipment and drive to pursue war, all they needed was a reason. Once that reason arose, the tension exploded out on each other.

During the activity today in class we had to simulate a world war situation. Negotiations that we made during this simulation were that were that we had to ally with all of the weaker countries to take out the biggest one. An example would be that in our class my country Caldonia allied with Sandia, Yorkton, Bahkan, and a non aggressive relation with Morovia which left the biggest country Penland, alone. Our motivation to do that was because they started to attack all the other countries so we didn't want them to get strong and destroy us. Lastly a problem we faced was that Penland was trying to ally with us at the same time but they were our enemy.
ReplyDeleteThe three factors that caused war in our class were that Penland attacked Bahkan and was planning to attack other people so everyone started to get angered. Another start was that Penland was being cocky and kind of a bully attacking small countries so that also caused anger. Lastly the final start of war was that countries were staring to try to expand which always leads to war which happened in our class. These reasons were similar to the start of WW1 because Germany was acting like the big counrty anger the other countries starting the war.
-Aaron Moyer
ReplyDeleteIn class we did an activity representing World War 1. My group was the country of Yorkton. We were one of the higher ranked countries. The goal we wanted to achieve was for five countries to come together to destroy Penland. Yorkton made many alliances and only kept one rival. Our groups made many compromises like letting other countries use our soil to battle on and also if we even wanted to get ourselves involved. We decided to get involved.
The plan was to have a five against one war, our group made multiple negotiations and we met our goal. One problem that influenced war was the idea of power. Every country wanted to be victorious. Another problem was negotiation some people didn't agree with what other people were saying to do. Lastly secret alliances influenced the war because groups made treaties but then decided to abandon the treaty and pretend it didn't mean anything.

(I'm adding to my post from earlier because I didn't see the prompt part!) A factor that caused war in our simulation was nationalism. Each country wanted to advance their interests and be sure that they survived. Another factor was imperialism because larger countries (penland) were bullying smaller countries. Another factor was the want for alliances and groups. Many countries knew that if they didn't join, they might not survive. In World War One, the archduke was assassinated in Boisa, just like how Penland was bullying Bahkan. Also, Germany declared was on Serbia and Russia had time to prepare. This happened in our simulation because the countries teamed up together and Penland had the time to be ready for them.
ReplyDeleteAllison Repsik
Caldonia (my country), Yorkton and Sandia came up with a master plan to destroy Penland. It was kind of a mutual effort to come up with a plan that would actually work. First we had to have our mutual support alliance so we all knew we'd actually go on with the plan. We also made a secret alliance with Bahkan so they'd know we were helping them and not about to blow them up. Then we got Morovia to form a semi alliance with us. It was a lot of work actually to try and make sure that no body messed up or like told our plan to Penland. Then we had to try and convince Penland that we would become their allies to destroy the other countries. That was actually the easiest part. We just wanted to make sure no one blew us or Yorkton up. Since Penland was threatening Yorkton, we almost felt the need to do something.
ReplyDeleteThe first thing that lead to war was the Penland was threatening Yorkton. We were allied with Yorkton so we felt the need to get involved and help. Then Penland started going around and saying they'd blow everyone up so we also did it out of our own protection. Lastly Penland was threatening to take over Bahkan and maybe if they were successful they wouldn't stop there and they'd try to take over us too.
Ally K.
I was a part of the country of Sandia for our simulation. We were allies with Bahkan from the start so we decided that we should stick to them, help them and not bail. But we also realized that we needed help as well from other countries. We had a large army but it was very poorly trained. Once we looked over the statistics of the different countries, we made a decision of who we thought was best to become allies with. We chose Caldonia and Yorkton. They seemed the most effective and reasonable countries for us. In the end, Bahkan, Yorkton, Caldonia and Sandia’s main goal was to take down Penland. We came together and put it in effect by declaring war against them.
ReplyDeleteThe three most important factors that caused our class to go to war were the secret alliances, Penland bullying Bahkan and lastly, shared hatred for Penland. The original alliance was Yorkton, Sandia and Caldonia but once we talked it over, we decided that since Sandia was already allies with Bahkan we should just add them to our plans. Caldonia and Bahkan made secret alliances with Penland but at the very last second dropped them and turned against Penland. Our causes of war were similar to what happened in WWI were the alliances (Triple Entente & Triple Alliance). Also, the idea of Imperialism. France, England and Germany wanted land in Asia and Africa and they were all very controlling. It is just like how Penland was being controlling and bullying Bahkan because of its size.
-Madi Scheuren
I was Yorkton and something that was interesting to me was how our allies cane to an easy and quick decision since we all had the same idea: defeat Penland. Interesting factors were the power struggle between Sandia, Penland, and Yorkton and the secret alliance between Bakhan and Yorkton. The alliance between sandia, caldonia, yorkton, and bakhan made our war a very interesting and made the odds in our favor H$
ReplyDeleteThe simulation was very simular to world war one because the big bountry bulied a llittle country that used to be part of the big country and all the other countries tried to join in on the war
ReplyDeleteIn our simulation backhan was part of pennland and now pennland was trying Bully Backhan and all the other countries besides Monrovia joind in on the war and joined an alliance against pennland.
Charles Hufnagle
The main deal with Morovia was that we were right in the middle of the whole continent so the only way to get anywhere was to get through us. We had to allow many rites of passage because Sandia, Caldonia and Yorkton were going to attack Penland and they needed to get through us. All of the other countries sided with Bahkan and attacked Penland. Our main motivation was that we had an alliance with Penland but we would die if we tried to side with them so we had to make a non-violent alliance with every other country.
ReplyDeletePenland was attacking a much smaller country than itself. This kind of relates to Germany attacking A-H. Then Bahkan made alliances with every other country. After that, everyone attacked Penland and destroyed it. In WW1, there was a triple alliance against Germany so Germany was trying to get alliances.
In our war in class we where mostly all allies. Pennland was ganging up on Bahkan so all of the other nations of the world had to stop them from harming Bahkan. Pennland surrendered to all of the other country's .
ReplyDeleteThe factors of war was that Pennland was attacking Bahkan. Pennland was also planning a attack on Sandia and one other country. Another factor was that Pennland was getting stronger and could take all the country's out and claim it for it self.
